July 27-28, 2019 - Shopping in Rock Springs and Visit to the Wild Horse Canyon at Pilot Butte

We had been here before (2017) but never saw more that a few horses at about a mile away and armed with cameras that just didn't have the reach to photograph them. Also, we had Edith1 at that time, so no 4x4 to take the two-track trails where the horses would probably be found. So we opted to explore that trip again.

However, on the way there we saw the sign that read "Lost Dog -->". Last time we followed the rough dirt road we drove about 2 miles in and never came upon anything so we doubled back not knowing where it lead to. This time we now knew that it leads to a point on the Flaming Gorge Reservoir that is popular for just relaxing by the water's edge, swimming or picnicing. It is also popular for ice fishing in the winter. Though we don't know if it is really worth the trip due to the poor condition of the road and the length of the trip down there. So we didn't go there this time either and just took photos with Ms. Roxy (who used to be a Lost Dog), and moved on towards the Wild Horse Canyon and Pilot Butte.

Typical Wyoming traffic.

Lost Dog, Wyoming

Roxy is shy, and does not really like to be photographed
so Bill had to hold her head to look at the camera.

Then to Green River to follow the Wild Horse Canyon off-road trails to Pilot Butte.

A place to dry camp on the edge of the ridge overlooking Green River Valley
See the view they have in the photo below.

Long range photo with our Nikon P-900 camera.

Same shot but with Zoom 1
And with Zoom 2

Then we drove up closer and they were not startled so we got much better photos...

Notice the foal laying down under the brown horse.

Though the ride is bumby, she loves to go along in her rear seat safey hammock

The stallion herd boss...

...and his mares.

This guy was gone by the time we got to where he was...
Bill walked all over where he was, but no sight of him. He was probably
laying in the sage motionless which is how they evade detection.

She loves watching the horses and other wild animals (like the antelope in our campground) but never bothers them. She just watches by our side.
OMG!! Lost 70 lbs. but recouped 15 lbs. This boy needs to
go back on a diet. Mary needs to quit cooking so good.

Isn't she sweet?

Some photos came off as out of focus due to the high heat.

Distant view of Pilot Butte. By the way... What is the difference between a Mesa and a Butte??  National Geographic says that they are basically the same except that generally a Mesa is wider horizontally and shorter vertically, whereas a Butte is the opposite. So given that explanation, why is Pilot Butte a 'butte' if it's wider than it is tall? Hmmm?? Inquiring minds want to know.

Climbing to the top (as high as one can go) of Pilot Butte.

And coming back down.

From the top of the ridge... looking down at North Rock Springs
and Rock Springs in the distance.

Edith2 off-roading at Pilot Butte on a beautiful day.

One feels so small in this vast expanse of land.

Dirt and grime.... battle scars for Edith2 on a two-track..

After all that off-roading we had to stop at this Flying-J truck stop where
regular gas was only $2.69 vs $2.89+ elsewhere around here.

On the way back home, going through Green River.

Getting back to Lucerne Recreation Area...
